social latin line dancing - further credits and record notes

Everything you've done reflects in everything you do.
Everywhere you've gone is there where you are.

social latin line dancing is the cumulation of seven years of work. In that time, I lived in Moncton, Caraquet, Acadieville, and Pointe-du-chêne. I walked barefoot in snow on top of Whistler mountain in July and in survival gear at the North Pole in March. I slept on the floor of the Dallas/Fort Worth airport and in a hospital chair days before I sat with a dear friend as she passed away. I recorded a song called $2 whore and another called Amazing. I woke up everyday and did things that contributed to this record. Today I came here, and so did you. This will contribute to my next record.

Electronica and ambient music are inevitable for me, as was social latin line dancing. There are loops and editing, but there is also much live performance, mostly captured in the place where the song was actually written. In the live performances, there is little editing. So what if the bass pushes and falls back a little. The backing vocals are not ‘tuned'. The human side of music remains important, in all genres.

The inside tray card of the record was created from a photo of an organ stop taken at the Labrador Heritage Museum, which detailed exploration and the trapping trade, and a lot of survival in general. We visited the museum during a Canadian Forces Northern Show Tour, where I was fortunate enough to be part of a show that entertained our Canadian troops at CFB Trenton, CFB Goose Bay and CFS Alert.

01 cause I want to love you.
inspired by and written in the Acadian peninsula, where I was writing as part of a project funded by the Canada Council for the arts.

This is one of two songs composed there - the other is a piece for solo electric bass.

02 don't walk (away mix)
re-mixed from ‘Don't Walk Away', written by Melanie M. Keith
From ‘Lemongrass & Cider' EP by Mel Keith & The Strombachs

This song was originally re-mixed for the Lemongrass & Cider EP. It was re-mixed again, ever so slightly, for this project, because it is very much at home here. The original performers on the song are: Mel Keith, vocals; Alain Bourgeois, drums; Robin Anne Ettles, acoustic & electric guitars, bass, programming, djembe. The vocals, bass and handclaps were recorded at John Maher's studio, with participation from John & Coleen. Their dogs, Phoebe and Sadie, ran excitedly around the microphone as we recorded the handclaps (it was their version of clapping).

03 3-06 homeostasis
Created in Suite 3-06 of the Hotel St. James, also during my Canada Council Project. 3-06 reflects the contemporary sheik of the room in which is was created and is a soundtrack for the hundreds of scenarios that will undoubtedly occur there over its lifetime.

04 wandering first off
‘wandering' was created while I was part of a documentary series called ‘Artiste dans l'âme/Spirited Artists', where two artists of different media exchanged works inspired by one another. I was paired with filmmaker Gerda Cammaer, whose work inspired this piece. Special thanks to Monique LeBlanc and CinImage Productions for the opportunity to create this song, and for giving me my first (and many since) chance at scoring for television and film. Vocals arranged by Peter Post and Robin.

05 boxy (gap)
... is the external expression of the panic I feel at shopping. The narration and ambient guitar of Chris Colepaugh appear in this song, although some of his most passionate lines were cut, such as: "Does this make me look fat?" "Will this fit me when I'm 23?" "What will I look like when I'm at the dance?"

06 elekatrishin
‘elekatrishin' is re-mixed from ‘Electrician', written by Kolin Barley, from the record Barley & The Durt (released June 2007). Although the original song was quite straightforward, I was always intrigued by the ‘electrical' nature of the song and the bizarreness of the temporary relationship between Kolin, his writer self and the drunked-up, crazy electrician. ‘elekatrishin' draws from these tension between these ephemeral elements. The ‘electrical' guitar sound at the end was inspired by a hike on Sugarloaf mountain in Campbellton, overlooking the town and the Centre hospitalier Restigouche, also during my Canada Council writing project.

07 ivy
‘ivy' was inspired by the public's obsession with Angelina Jolie. I've been fascinated not so much by Angelina herself but by the public's attraction to her. She receives equal attention whether she is behaving quite strangely or being an ambassador for the UN. Usually people like heros OR weirdos. Perhaps, deep down, we wish we could be either/or without consequence. This song was written and recorded in North Hatley, QC, while I spent a summer stage managing Marshall Button's Lucien II show at The Piggery Theatre.

08 your beauty lies within (mix of june)
This song was originally created for ‘Songs from the Bay: The Fundy Sessions'. It was recorded in Caraquet, NB, with additional recording at the studio formerly known as Creative Sound Studios, and originally mixed by John Maher. Moe Fougère played the live drums. The song is dedicated to the memory of Nadine Babineau. The appearance of her 1976 Gibson ES-335 on the recording was the last it made while Nadine was still living.

09 movement of trains
... a song of ‘firsts'. This is the first song I have ever created from a title - the name of the song was in my head long before I created the recording. It features the first appearance of my theremin, named Carlysle. Theremin is insanely difficult to play and I think my tracking of it here is about as complex as it will ever be.

10 tripcules
‘Tripcules' is a hybrid of ‘Trippy' and ‘Imitating Hercules' from the Imitating Hercules album by the Ettles-Keith Project. The mix and its soundscape was inspired by an episode of the last season of The Sopranos: following Christopher's death, Tony goes to Vegas, does peyote with Christopher's ex-lover and trips out at a casino. Samples are used here from ‘Invisible, I Am', written by Robin Anne Ettles, from the album Barley & The Durt.
